Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) is a non-invasive treatment that can help reduce angina (chest pain) and improve quality of life in selected patients with chronic stable angina, particularly when symptoms continue despite optimal medical therapy or when invasive procedures are not suitable.
Research Summary
A meta-analysis published in Pharmacotherapy (2010) evaluated the effectiveness of EECP in patients with chronic stable angina. The analysis included 13 prospective clinical studies involving 949 patients.
Patients received the standard EECP protocol of 35 one-hour sessions, five days a week for seven weeks. Researchers assessed improvement using the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Angina Classification, a widely accepted grading system for the severity of angina.
Key Findings
- 86% of patients experienced an improvement of at least one CCS angina class after completing EECP.
- Many patients reported reduced frequency and severity of chest pain, allowing them to perform daily activities more comfortably.
- The authors concluded that EECP is a valuable treatment option for patients with chronic stable angina who remain symptomatic despite medical therapy or who are not suitable candidates for angioplasty or bypass surgery.
- The study also recommended further long-term research to better define the role of EECP in routine cardiovascular care.
Take-Home Message
Current evidence supports EECP as a safe, non-invasive treatment that may reduce angina symptoms and improve functional capacity in appropriately selected patients. Treatment decisions should always be individualized after evaluation by a qualified cardiologist and in accordance with current clinical guidelines.

EECP is a non-invasive therapy that may be considered for selected patients with certain cardiovascular conditions. Whether it is right for you depends on your medical history, symptoms, overall health, and clinical assessment.
If you’re wondering whether EECP could be a suitable option, a consultation can help determine the next steps based on your individual condition.
